Royal Bank Of Scotland Customers Unable To Withdraw Their Cash
Saturday saw millions of Royal Bank of Scotland customers unable to withdraw money from cash points due to a technical difficulty with the banks withdrawal system. While these things can happen, the most worrying element to this particular episode was the fact the Royal Bank were unable to pin point the problem - leaving many wondering if their personal detail were safe.
The Group (which also incorporates NatWest) is one of the leaders in the UK, and while shop payment and shop cash back facilities where not effected by the problem, this is a major embarrassment still yet to be completely fixed. When you consider the recent problems with TJ Maxx where up to 45 million credit card details were stolen, the consumer is starting to see some worrying patterns emerge.
For many years Banks have been one of the most trusted institutions in the country, with a time honoured tradition for confidentiality and retention of personal information. Recent takeovers, mergers and general changes in systems have seen some of this long held confidence eroded.
While the internet has been embraced by a large number of banking customers, there have also been a number of high profile “hacking†instances online. Slowly but surely the smaller banking branches are disappearing, the personal service has all but gone and a vast number of services are now automated.
Banking certainly has changed over the last 10 years, although there may just be a niche market for a bank brave enough to put personal contact first, something which we all took for granted 10 years ago!
