McDonald’s Leading The Green Movement!

In a move which many would never have forecast, fast food chain McDonald’s are taking an active role in the issue of vehicle emissions, and assisting the green movement After a successful trial last year they have announced plans to convert all of their UK lorries to run on biodiesel by next year. By using a mixture of the firm’s cooking oil and rapeseed oil the company expect to reduce their carbon emissions by some 1,650 tonnes a year!

So can the public play their part?

Unfortunately it is not as easy for the public to actively play their part as yet, due to the cost of converting older cars, and the cost of purchasing new cars adapted for the new fuel. There have been instances in the past where the government have offered tax incentives to encourage the use of and conversion to biodiesel (and similar products) but they have not taken off as yet.

There is no doubt that authorities will be using various means to encourage the reduction of carbon emissions by every household, with much mention of further tax charges for those who do not recycle sufficient amounts, or participate actively in a number of “green” issues.

There is no doubt that emissions need to be reduced as soon as possible, but quite how this will happen and who will fund the changes remains to be seen. However, in the long term there are potentially large cost savings to be made……for all of us.
