Is “Going Green” Cost Effective?

Never more so than recently has the environment been in the news, with more doom and gloom predictions and advice to “turn green”.  While we have all been advised about what we should be doing to “turn green”, will it really make a difference and is it cost effective?

Without doubt the answer to both questions is yes…………

Apart from the immediate positive impact on the environment, “turning green” can really be cost effective for the consumer.  Here are just a few of the ways in which you can help the environment and help yourself :-

· Energy Saving Light Bulbs.  While low energy light bulbs are a little more expensive than traditional light bulbs, they have been proven to last around 12 times longer, use 75% less energy and result in savings of £65 per bulb.

· Home Insulation.  A small improvement in your loft insulation and windows can have a massive impact upon your energy costs.  Reductions of up to £180 are common place, with even the smallest of improvements.

· Green Fuel.  Cars, buses and trains are one of the main contributors to global warming with their gas emissions.  A simple change to “green fuel” and a more efficient car, etc can result in massive price savings.

· Switch Off Appliances.  This is one of the main sources of excessive energy use, leaving TVs on standby and appliances plugged in when not in use.  Savings of up to £11 per appliance are common place.

· Heating Systems.  Tturning your thermostat down just one degree can result in savings of up to £30 a year - and reduce energy use.

· Recycling Your Rubbish.  By recycling your rubbish there is a greater opportunity to reuse elements of your waste.  This reduces the requirement for landfill sites which have been known to pollute the land around them, often releasing harmful gases into the atmosphere.

These are just a few of the many changes which you can make to save yourself hundreds of pounds a year, and do you bit to help the environment.  As the requirement to reduce our energy consumption increases, it is very likely that the Government will introduce further tax incentives, with yet more savings for those “going green”.
