Is An EU Super State On The Way?

There has been much speculation in the press over the last few weeks about potential changes in the European Union (EU) and how this may effect the likes of the UK. Despite the failure of the most recent European Constitution, it seems that EU ministers are looking to try again, under a different guise - but will it work?

While the authorities are telling us that the new “constitution” does not need to go to the people for a vote, there are potentially enormous changes to everyday life - with employment and competition rules especially high on the discussion list.

The European authorities have been trying for years to bring all EU members into line on the maximum number of hours which can be worked each week. The UK has perhaps one of the most flexible work forces in Europe and it looks as though a restriction would both impact upon the money which you take home, and the tax intake for the government.

There has also been much speculation about a direct tax charge to fund the new EU authority, with the likes of social security benefits, pension payments and overall taxation under review. It will be interesting to see how this ongoing situation develops, and how it will impact upon the UK population in particular.
